Feather with birds taking flight
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a large feather running diagonally up the left side of the page, with fine hatched strokes giving the barbs texture and depth. Around ten small bird silhouettes in solid black drift off the upper right of the feather, each in a different pose. The image is in black and grey on a pale background with plenty of open space around the motif.

The first thud against the lantern glass came just after you lit the wick, and by the time the sky went fully black there were eleven of them stacked along the gallery rail like dropped gloves. Thrushes, mostly, a few finches, and one swallow that had left it too late in the year. Mrs Ibbotson at the mainland post would want the numbers for her ledger, so you counted them and wrote them down in the log in the same blunt pencil you had used for forty years of weather.

Your brother Callum had kept the light before you, and he had a rule about the birds: you did not sweep them up until morning. Leave them, he said, and the gulls will have what they want and the sea will have the rest. You thought that a hard sort of kindness until the night you found a long grey feather snagged in the brass hinge of the gallery door, its barbs still stiff, its quill cold and clean.
You turned it in the beam. Each time the lamp swept round, the feather seemed to lift a little more, as though the wind had found a way inside the glass. Then the birds came off the rail one after another, not falling but rising, and they wheeled above the rock in a loose ragged cloud before peeling south toward the coast they had been trying to reach all along.
You did not go after them. You stood in the doorway with the feather resting on your palm and wrote one last line in the log: flock away, light well, nothing to sweep. Then you pressed the quill between the pages to keep the place, the way Callum used to, and went down the iron stairs to put the kettle on.
