Feather with birds taking flight on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a feather tattoo on the side of a torso, with a flock of small birds flying up and away from its quill. The birds are dark silhouettes that shrink as they rise, and the feather has soft grey shading along its vane. The ink is black and grey, set against bare skin, with denim shorts and pink underwear visible at the lower edge of the frame.

Harriet had counted the doves twice before the vicar reached the second reading, and both times there were nine. Her uncle Dennis had bought them from a loft in Hebden Bridge, a crate of grey birds that smelled of straw and worried the caterers. "They'll go up where they like," he said, lifting the lid behind the marquee, "and come home to whoever they know."

The bride, Priya, had asked for no speeches and no fuss, so the guests stood on the wet lawn with paper cups of prosecco and waited. Harriet held the feather her father had pressed into her hand that morning, a long grey flight feather from a racing bird that had died in the spring. Its vane had gone soft at the edges from years of being handled. She held it the way she might hold a pen she had forgotten how to use.
The birds went up in a ragged knot, wheeled over the chimney of the old mill, then split into two loose strands. Dennis swore they would all be back by teatime. Harriet watched them shrink against the Pennine sky until they were specks, then nothing, and realised she had stopped counting somewhere around the fourth.
Later, when the band had started and the cake was being cut, she found the feather had left a fine grey dust on her palm. She wiped it on her dress and went looking for her uncle. He was crouched by the empty crate, peering up at the roof of the mill. "Two are back already," he said, without turning round. "The rest will come when they're ready."
