Old Mateus, who inked half the crew in a back room in Valparaíso with a machine he built from a sewing motor, once told you that a swallow on a sailor meant a sailor who had come back. By morning the water is flat and green, and somebody on the forecastle is singing a song about a girl in Cadiz, badly enough that nobody minds.
