Dessa had driven the Sable Flats route for eleven years, and in all that time the only thing that ever made her stop was a bird. Not a live one. This was a feather, grey as ash, lying in the middle of the carriageway forty miles past the last petrol station, pinned under a flat stone as if someone had wanted it found.

She picked it up and turned it over. The quill was still stiff. Tucked beneath it was an envelope with no stamp, addressed in pencil to a farmhouse that had been empty since the drought took the wells. She knew the house. Her own father had been born in it, and she had not been inside since the funeral.

Inside was a single sheet, the handwriting looping and careful: I have kept a piece of my heart for always, and I have sent the rest down this road in the only post that never gets lost. It was her mother's hand. Her mother had been dead nine years, and the postmark, when Dessa held it to the light, was from last Tuesday.

She sat with the engine ticking and the heat rising off the tarmac in sheets. Then she set the feather on the dashboard, put the van into gear, and drove on toward the farmhouse, because some letters are only delivered when someone finally comes to collect them.
