Script quote along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote runs diagonally along the side of the ribs, written in a fine, slightly slanted cursive with even line weight. The lettering is set against smooth, lightly tanned skin, with a navel piercing and a small surface piercing nearby. The shot is cropped to the torso, with a yellow and striped top at the edge of the frame.

Dear Tom,

You'll have to forgive the smudged biro. I'm on the 2am round with a cold tea going cold beside me, and Maureen has just put the kettle on for the third time tonight, which is her way of saying she doesn't want to talk about the bed in bay four. I was meant to be on a train to Whitby by now. I had the tickets printed and folded in my purse, and the bag packed by the door like a proper grown-up.

Then the ambulance came in at ten past nine with a man who'd come off a ladder, and the rota I'd been so pleased with fell to bits. Nobody asked me. Nobody ever does. I stood in the corridor holding a clipboard and thought, well, that's that, and laughed in a way Sister didn't appreciate.

Here is the thing I keep turning over. Mr Okafor in bay four has been asking the same question all night, whether it's Thursday, whether his daughter's flight has landed. Each time I tell him the truth, and each time he looks surprised, as if the world should have checked with him first. I used to find that sad. Tonight it just seems honest.

So the train goes without me. I'll go in June, or I won't, and either way the sea will still be there. Fate doesn't care about plans, but it has a good sense of timing, and I'm told the night staff get the best biscuits. Write back and tell me the Whitby ticket was a good investment.

Love, Jo
