Script word tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink script word is written in flowing, cursive lettering across the side of the ribs, with the tattoo curving gently with the body. The linework is fairly fine and the lettering is solid black with no shading or colour. The photograph is black and white and softly lit, with the torso filling most of the frame and a sheer curtain visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The barrier at Hallwick has been down for four hours, and the man in the lorry cab has run out of anything true to say. So he starts a story about a heron who sold her shadow to a ferryman, and you, in the booth with the kettle gone cold, pick it up before he finishes the sentence. By the third lie you are both building it together, passing it back and forth through the glass like a cigarette nobody admits to wanting: the ferryman's wife keeps a ledger of weather, the heron keeps a rubber stamp in her beak, the river runs backwards on feast days.

Your supervisor rings twice to ask why the queue is quiet. You tell her the system is slow. Outside, the snow thickens over the rail sheds and the floodlights pick out every flake, and the man laughs so hard at your version of the ferryman's wife that he has to wipe his eyes on his sleeve.
When the barrier finally lifts he hands back your passport with a folded note tucked inside the cover. It is one line in careful capitals: SHE SOLD IT FOR A ROUTE, NOT A RIVER. You turn it over. On the back, in pencil, is a stamp drawn freehand, a heron with its wings half open, and beneath it the ending you had never told him, the one you had only half thought, which he must have heard in the shape of your sentences.
