Feathered arrow with fleur-de-lis head
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single arrow runs diagonally across a pale sheet, with a feathered fletching at the top right and a faceted, hatched arrowhead at the bottom left. The shaft has a rough, twig-like texture with small offshoots, and a fleur-de-lis motif sits behind the head. The drawing uses fine ink linework and cross-hatched shading in black on a plain background.

Tobias had been fletching for the forest lodge since Lent, and the last bundle of ash shafts lay on the bench like kindling. Most were straight enough for the lord's hunt. The one he kept back had a knot where a side branch had been cut away, and its bark still twisted like rope. Master Osric looked at it over his cup of cider and said it was no good for a king's arrow. Tobias agreed, and kept it anyway.

He cut three goose feathers into a fan, bound them with waxed thread, and stood the arrow against the wall to dry. The smith in town had sent up a batch of heads that week, each stamped with the lily of the royal forest. Tobias chose the faceted head with the hatched shading, the one that caught the light like a cut stone, and seated it on the shaft. It fitted too well. He did not mention this to anyone.
On the morning of the hunt the lord's party rode out in a clatter of hooves, and the arrows went with them in their quivers. Tobias stayed behind mending a cracked bow. By noon the men came back without the stag. The beast had gone into the thicket, and the feathered arrow had been found standing upright in a fallen log, as if someone had planted it there for a marker. Nobody asked where it came from. Tobias did not ask either.
That evening he walked out to the log and worked the shaft free with his thumbs. It was lighter than he remembered. He carried it home under his coat and hung it on the nail above the door, where the old men could see it when they came in from the rain, and where it has stayed.
