Arrow with infinity symbol sketch

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil or ink sketch of an arrow pointing right, with feathered fletching at the back and a barbed head at the front. An infinity symbol is looped around the shaft near the centre. The lines are thin and shaded lightly, and the drawing sits centred on a cream paper background with a pinkish edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The arrow left the stern of the Marrow Gull on the ninth morning out of Falmouth, when the crew had run out of things to argue about. Tobiah Crane, who could split a gull's wing at forty paces, loosed it east toward nothing in particular, and the men laughed when he said it would come back to them. Nobody laughed on the third day, when the feathered shaft was still riding the swell a length ahead of the bow, never sinking and never falling behind.

Sefton the cook said it was the wind's doing, or the sea's, and that anything which kept going deserved a proper name. He bound a loop of tarred twine around the shaft, pulled it tight, and tied the figure of eight that old sailors use for luck and for things that cannot be untied. The captain told him to stop making jokes about knots. But the arrow kept its place, and each dawn it seemed a little nearer the bow, as if it were waiting to be asked aboard.

They turned for home when the water ran short. Seven weeks later, with the cliffs of Cornwall grey on the port side, the arrow was still ahead of them, and the Marrow Gull came into harbour hard on its tail. Mae Penrose, the captain's daughter, stood on the quay with a basket of pilchards when the shaft slid up against the stone and rocked there, feathers dripping.

She picked it up and turned it over. The twine had frayed to a single thread, but the loop still held. She looked out past the breakwater to where the ship was warping in, then back at the arrow, and understood they had sailed all the way round to where they started. Nobody on the Gull ever again asked her father where he had been shooting.
