Feathered wings across back and arms

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A shirtless man is photographed from behind with both arms raised and wrists crossed above his head. Large detailed feathered wings cover his back, shoulders and upper arms, rendered in fine hatched linework and smooth shading. The monochrome photograph has a dark plain background and strong side lighting that emphasises the muscle definition and the feather texture.

The Cassiopeia Mary was eleven days out of Valparaíso when the bosun sent you aloft to free the mainyard gasket, and nobody else would go. The wind had the topsail snapping like a wet sheet, and the old sailmaker, Hollis Marr, stood at the rail with a cold pipe clamped between his teeth and watched you start up the weather ratlines.

Halfway up, the deck fell away beneath you and the sea came up grey and enormous, and your hands forgot what they were for. Hollis had told you in the forecastle that a man who climbs out of fear ends up feeding the gulls, but a man who climbs for the sake of the climbing finds the ship takes some of the weight for him. You had thought that was the kind of thing old sailors said to keep green hands from fainting. Now a gannet came level with the yardarm and held its wings out stiff against the gale, not flapping once, and you found yourself copying the angle of them without meaning to.

The gasket was knotted hard with a winter's worth of salt. You worked at it with your fingers until they bled, then with your teeth, and the rope gave all at once. The mainsail dropped from its bunt and filled with a crack like a rifle shot, and the whole ship leaned to meet it.

When you came down the shrouds, Hollis had not moved from the rail. He took the pipe from his mouth, looked up at the yard for a long moment, and said nothing at all. Behind the stern the wake spread out white and feathered, all the way back to the horizon.
