Star tattoo on a shoulder
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A monochrome studio photograph of a shirtless, muscular man with his head covered by a dark fabric that sweeps across the frame. A small starburst tattoo with fine radiating lines sits on the upper arm close to the shoulder. The lighting is high contrast against a grey backdrop, and the composition centres on the torso and arm.

The chart-room lamp had been smoking since midnight, and Tobias Vane still refused to let anyone trim the wick. Outside, the Gwenna Mary was somewhere past the Cradle rocks with nine men aboard and no lights showing, and every minute the lamp burned bright was a minute the water stayed hidden from them.

His sister Nell brought the black oilcloth down from the net loft, the heavy stuff they used to cover the herring baskets. Tobias draped it over the window and across his own shoulders, then bent over the table, where he had drawn a compass star in iron-gall ink the summer he turned twelve. Eight points, each line fine as a hair, all of them pointing home. He laid his finger on the north point and said the boats had always steered by it, even when the sky had nothing to say.
Nell held the cloth steady while he worked the old brass sextant by the shuttered light, counting under his breath. He had never once lost a boat he was charting. When the wind dropped near four, a white flash came from the Cradle, then another, the shape of a star held up in the dark. Someone aboard had found the north point and kept it.
At dawn the Gwenna Mary came in under reefed canvas, and Nell folded the oilcloth into a neat square and set it on the windowsill, where the morning fell across it in bright, straight lines.
