Feathers and ornament behind the ear

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo sits on the side of the head behind the ear, showing feathers hanging from an ornate motif with a curved top. The shading is built from stippled dots and fine strokes, with crisp outlines defining the feather barbs. Dark hair and a denim collar frame the tattoo, which is the focus of the close-up composition.

The bell on the bow of the Marrow had rung three nights running before Tom Pelling thought to go down the bank with a lantern. It was not a loud bell. It sounded the way a spoon sounds against a cup in another room, and it always stopped the moment he reached the gangplank.

Nell Garrow, who had kept the ferry at Hensworth since before the lock was built, heard him out over a mug of stewed tea. 'The river keeps accounts,' she said. 'Anything taken from it, it asks back for, and it sends a feather to remind you.' She would not say more, only that the feathers always came off the grey herons that stood in the shallows below the weir, and that a bell rang until its debt was paid.

On the fourth morning he found it: a single grey feather, barred dark like a sheet of rain, tied to the bell rope with a knot he did not recognise. Beneath it, pressed into the varnish of the bow, were tiny dots in a curved row, the way frost marks a windowpane. He carried the feather along the towpath to the weir and asked the heron standing there whether it was the one he owed. The bird did not move, so he took that as a yes.

He dropped the feather onto the brown water and watched it spin out into the current. That night the bell stayed quiet, and in the morning there was a second feather hanging from the rope, white this time, and Nell laughed when he showed her. 'That one's for the lock keeper,' she said. 'He always was slow to pay.'
