Small black rose behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small black rose with a long stem and two leaves is tattooed on the skin behind the ear, with the head shown in side profile. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded in grey and black to give some depth. The design is centred on the neck area with the ear and pulled-back hair framing it, and the image has no colour ink.

...and so the rose-seller, who had no business being out past the lamplighters, came up Pennywhistle Lane with a single bloom wrapped in brown paper under his arm. Why black, you ask? Hush now, I'm getting to it. It had been grown in the cellar of the old dye works on Tanner Street, where no sun ever reached, and it had grown the wrong way, its stem long and thin as a bootlace, bending towards the one gas lamp still burning at the corner.

Two leaves it had, no more, and they were the colour of wet slate. The petals were tight at the heart and loosened at the edges, shaded so deep that a man squinting under that lamp could not tell where the shadow stopped and the flower began. The seller knew a thing or two about shadows. He had sold roses in this city for forty years and never once been paid in coin without a dead king's face pressed into it, so when the woman in the green coat held out her palm and asked the price, he told her the truth: a kiss on the cheek and her true name, and the rose was hers.
She gave him neither. She tucked the stem behind her ear, where the lamp could catch it, and walked off towards the river without a backward glance. Some say the rose is still there; nobody has ever got it to wilt. Others say the seller went down to the cellar the next morning and found only a bootlace coiled on the flags, a cold lamp, and his own name written in the dust in a hand he did not recognise.
