Feather tattoo across back and shoulder

Back · Mixed · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, showing a large feather design that runs from the shoulder blade down toward the lower back. The feathers are drawn in dark outline with grey shading and fine hatched detail. Smaller coloured tattoos with pink, yellow and blue tones appear at the lower left side and near the hip.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the village of Harrowby Cross the peacock belonged to nobody, which is why the miller's girl was allowed to feed it. Each autumn it dropped its long feathers along the lane to the mill, and the children gathered them for hats. Only Ada Penrose kept hers in a tin, and she counted the eyes on them every Sunday after church.

The carrier, Samuel Vane, came through every Michaelmas with a cart of salt and a bad chest. He wanted one feather, the greenest, for his wife, who had gone grey in the Lent frost and would not leave her chair. Ada told him the feathers were not for selling, only for keeping. He said that was the same thing in the end, and she could not argue with a man who coughed like that.

She gave him the feather that night, but the peacock followed it. Each morning it walked down the lane after the cart until the carrier stopped, turned round, and sang to it in a language nobody in Harrowby knew. Ada learned the tune by heart. By spring every feather had dropped from the bird, the lane was bare, and every eye in her tin had opened and turned towards the road.

She carried the tin to the crossroads and let the wind take them. The mill is still standing. On windy nights the lane fills with feathers, and the children are told not to pick them up, because they are not for keeping, only for watching.
