The Christmas dance at Hollin Farm had always been held in the barn, after the last cow was milked and before the fiddler got too drunk to play. That year Martha Pell stood by the door with her arms folded and would not step onto the boards.

Master Coe asked her what ailed her. She said nothing ailed her, only that the dairymaids had been up since four and the men had sat by the grate all day with their boots on the fender. Then she asked who was going to carry the water in the morning, who would scrape the pans, and whether the fiddler would be paid for scraping as well as playing. Somebody laughed. Somebody else called her a killjoy, and the word went round the barn faster than the cider.

She walked home across the frozen yard without her shawl. Next morning the yard was swept, the pails were full, and a pair of new pattens sat on her step, though nobody would say whose hands had cut the leather. The dance was held again at Candlemas, and this time the men took their turn at the pans while the women kept time with their feet.

The old dairy wives still tell it that way, with a grin. When the children ask why Martha's name is cut into the lintel above the milk house door, they are told it was a joke that stuck, and that the farm stayed warm because one woman would not dance until the work was done.
