Quote across the upper back near the shoulder
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's upper back and shoulder showing a black lettered quote set in a serif typeface across two lines with a gap between them. The ink is crisp and solid with no shading, and the skin is lit by warm natural light from the side. The text sits diagonally across the shoulder blade area, with the rest of the frame showing a dark strap and a blurred background.

Sit down, sit down, the coffee's still hot if you're quick about it. You want the story of the Abernathy sisters, or you want the bit about the fence? Everyone wants the fence. Out past the salt flats, where Route 9 bends like a dropped belt, there were two houses a hundred yards apart. Ida lived in the blue one. Marjorie lived in the one the colour of old bone. They had not exchanged a word since 1971, over a goat that turned out not to belong to either of them.

Their quarrel had a fence in it, and a fence needs posts. Every spring one of them drove a post a foot closer to the other's porch, and every autumn the other pulled it up and set it back where it had been, with a bit of extra concrete to annoy. Their nephews gave up. The postman gave up and left the parcels at the highway. Nobody was ever going to win that fence, and both of them knew it, and I think that was the beauty of it, though I would never have said so to either one.
Then came the drought summer, and the well at the blue house went dry. Ida walked the hundred yards in her slippers with a jerrycan on each hip. Marjorie was already sitting on her step with the hose coiled beside her, as if she had been expecting her for years. Neither spoke. Marjorie pulled the last post out of the sand herself, laid it flat, and they sat together on the step until the sun went down behind the mesa.
The fence is still lying out there in the dust. Ida says it has been a beautiful fight. Marjorie says it still is. Neither of them has ever agreed with the other about anything, so you may take that however you like.
