Fern frond tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single fern frond is tattooed on the inner forearm, with the stem running up towards the elbow and the leaflets fanning down towards the wrist. The linework is fine and the leaflets are shaded with soft grey tones to give the frond depth. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, set against a plain light background with the person's hand resting at the hip.

You climb the gatehouse stair at Carrow Hollin because the portcullis has gone and the ferns have taken what the weather left. Rain has softened the mortar, and polypody and hart's tongue grow from every joint, their fronds hanging like sentences nobody finished. The wind off the moor smells of wet stone and something sweeter underneath.

In the solar, on a ledge where the sun still reaches, you find a sketchbook swollen with damp. Edith Quarles drew this ruin in 1851, every arch and buttress set down in fine grey pencil. Between the pages for the east wall she has pressed a single frond, its leaflets gone brown and brittle. Beneath it, in a hand that tightens as it goes, she has written: Taken from the stair. Keep it flat. Do not let them tell you it was never here.
You think of the landlady at the inn, who asked yesterday whether you had found the drawings and then went quiet when you said yes. You could carry the sketchbook down the hill. Instead you lift the frond with a fingernail and lay it back in its own shadow on the page. You shade the leaflets in soft graphite until they look as if they might still lift in a breeze, then close the book on them. Outside, the wall is green again where the rain has run, and the fern on it keeps fanning towards the ground as if it has somewhere to be.
