Wavy line band on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a woman's forearm and hand, with a band of stacked, wavy black lines tattooed across the forearm. The lines vary in height and spacing, creating a rippling, layered effect that fades into bare skin at the edges. The image is black and grey, with a plain pale wall and a grey dress setting a neutral backdrop.

The drum turned at its slow pace, and the pen on the end of the arm kept up its small, patient argument with the paper. Ruth had stopped hearing the scratch of it hours ago. At ten past three she lifted the sheet from the spindle, held it up to the lamp and saw what she had been missing: the same ridge coming round every eleven minutes, a little taller each time, as if someone were humming under the floorboards.

She rang the harbour master first, because that was the sensible thing. He said the tide had turned at nine and the Mary Hollis was still out past the breakwater with her lights on. Nobody had reported a tremor. Nobody ever did down here unless the crockery moved. Ruth sat with the strip across her knees and ran her thumb along the lines the way her father used to read the rain gauge, counting. Each wave rose in a shallow hill and fell into a trough, and no two troughs quite matched, so the page looked less like a graph than a blanket pulled out of shape.

At half four the pier lamp blinked off, and the ridges on the paper flattened for a whole minute before coming back wilder. She understood then that the instrument had been listening to the sea all night, to the swell stacking itself against the stone, and that she was the one who had mistaken a shoreline for the earth.

She pinned the strip to the wall above the kettle. The outer lines faded where the ink had run out before the drum came round, while the middle stayed dark and certain. She made tea, wrote the time in the log and, under remarks, put: sea. nothing else.
