Black fine line botanical tattoo of a trailing fern sprig on the upper arm, with a tiny outlined heart on a finger.

Fern sprig on upper arm with small heart on finger

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's upper arm shows a black fern-like sprig tattoo that trails down from the shoulder, drawn in fine, even linework with no shading. A small outlined heart sits on the side of one finger of the hand resting across her body. The image is a close, softly lit crop of a grey marl t-shirt, bare arm and hand, with the face out of frame.

The fern had come up through the cracked flags of the platform at Lowmoor Junction the spring the line was closed, and nobody had the heart to pull it. Old Mrs Tredinnick, who kept the lamp room and the tea urn, said it had been there before the timetable and would be there after. Ada, who had come to sweep the waiting room the week her mother went into hospital in Bristol, thought it looked like a sprig of something that wanted to be carried somewhere.

On the last Tuesday of the month a stranger got off the stopping train with one boot unlaced and a tin of cuttings wrapped in wet newspaper. She asked for a knife. Ada gave her the bread knife from the buffet, and together they lifted three fronds from the crack, root and grit and all, and packed them into the tin with moss. The stranger said the trains would find their way back, and Ada said she had never once seen them do so, and the stranger laughed as if that had been the right answer.

When the next train came through the cutting, Ada stood where the platform ran out and watched it go. Somewhere past the signal box a single stem was catching on the wind, pale green against the rails. She kept the bread knife. She never gave it back, and the buffet never asked for it.
