Small fine line tattoo of a mountain range with shaded peaks in black and grey on the forearm of a person wearing a white top.

Mountain range on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a jagged mountain range sits on the forearm, with the arm extended towards the camera. The peaks are drawn in thin black linework, with grey shading on the lower slopes and ridges to give some depth. The ink is black and grey only, and the tattoo is shown against a plain white top and a pale wall.

The lift in Tanner House had been dead since March, so I took the stairs with the envelope flat against my chest, two steps at a time until my calves burned. Eleven floors. Every landing smelt of bleach and someone's Sunday roast, and the only window that opened was on the sixth, where a boy was smoking with his elbows on the sill and didn't look round.

Grandad lived at the top, in the flat with the good view. He'd worked the rigs on wind turbines up north before his hands went, and in his last winter he drew the hills beyond the ring road on the back of a gas bill because he said he couldn't sleep without something to count. "Five of them," he said, tapping the paper with a biro that had nearly run dry. "The one on the left is the bad one. Never trust the left one."

The flat was empty now, the carpet rolled in the hall and a man from the council waiting on the landing with a clipboard. I didn't argue. I went straight to the window, pulled the envelope out, and held it against the glass so the pencil lines sat over the real ridge, the same jagged run of peaks with a grey cloud resting in the notch where his had been.

The left one still leaned. I traced it on the glass with my finger, leaving a smudge the man with the clipboard would have to wipe, and then I copied all five onto the inside of my own arm in biro, the left one shaded heavier so the ink would hold when I took it to the parlour on Saturday.
