Ferrari prancing horse on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a rearing horse with a flowing mane and tail sits above the word Ferrari in a bold block typeface. The horse is rendered in solid black fill with small pale highlights left as bare skin, and the lettering is crisp and evenly inked. The shot is taken straight on at arm height, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a plain background.

Dear Tomasz, the tide tables say the Wenna will be in on Thursday, and I have already put the kettle on twice just thinking about it. Don't bring the grey coat. Your mother has been mending the lining since March and it still smells of diesel from the last crossing.

The black stallion you asked about is still on the lock gate at Porthaven. Mr Coad repainted the lettering in the spring but left the horse alone, rearing up over the water with its mane blown back as if it means to outrun the weir. The boys from the fish market say it was there before the war, though nobody can say who put it there. I like to think it was someone who had seen a horse once and could not stop thinking about it.
Something else happened last Tuesday. A stranger came into the chandlery asking for a length of tarred rope and a hand mirror. When I asked what the mirror was for, he said he wanted to check the horse was still moving. I did not follow him. He left the coins in a neat stack on the counter and walked off up the hill without his change.
Come home by Thursday. I have kept the back room warm, and I have kept the horse for you too, the one on the gate, because you always said it looked as though it had somewhere more important to be.
