Tribal dragon on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black tribal-style dragon with raised wings sits on the calf, its tail curling round below it in a loop. The design uses bold outlines with solid black fill and patterned detail along the wings and body. The image is entirely black ink on skin, set against a dark red carpet with the leg shown in a close, slightly angled crop.

The dragon came down off the hill on the morning of the Hale wedding, when the bells had already rung twice and the cooper had not yet reached the church. It folded its wings the way a farmwife folds a wet sheet, slowly and without fuss, and laid its tail in a loop across the flagstones of the lych gate. Nobody screamed. Old Mother Crane said afterwards that she had known it was coming since the hens went quiet.

"I have come to stand witness," it said, in a voice like a gate hinge. "No one else in this parish will stand at a gate for a wedding, and a gate with no witness is only wood." Tom Penny, who had been sick twice that morning with nerves, asked what it wanted for the service. The dragon looked at the iron hoop on the cooper's belt, the one he used for binding barrels, and said it would take that and nothing more.
So Tom unbuckled it and handed it over. The dragon wound the hoop round the loop of its own tail, where it sat as snug as a ring on a finger. Marrit came up the path in her mother's veil. The dragon bowed its great head, and its wings lifted like a sail taking wind, and it said the words the old vicar had forgotten: that a thing given freely is a thing kept.
They were married at the gate with the dragon standing over them. Ever after, the Hales swore the iron still shone on the hill each August, and when a child in Wrenfield was born with a dark crest of hair along the shoulder, the midwife would say, there goes the witness, and be glad of it.
