Figure-eight knot rope design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A drawing of a figure-eight knot tied in a length of twisted rope, with the two loops crossing over a horizontal strand that runs off both ends. The rope is outlined in heavy black lines and shaded with light and dark grey tones to give it a twisted, three-dimensional look. The knot is centred on a plain tan gradient background with generous space around it.

Dear Ines, the forward lift cable on Ring Four has been humming for a week, and Oskar swears it will go before the next turn of the wheel, so I have spent three days in the rope store with the old hemp we carried up from Earth. You would hate the smell. It is tar and somebody's grandmother's kitchen, all at once.

Yesterday I had a new line in my hands and the sum would not come right. Grandad's rule was that a rope without a stopper is a rope already planning to run away from you. So I tied the figure eight at the business end, the way he showed us on the pier at Lowestoft: the tail taken round and back through the loop like a snake that has thought better of biting its own tail. I hauled on it hard, the way Oskar does, and it held. I cried a little after that, because it looked exactly like the knot in his old drawing book, the one with the coffee ring on the cover.
Oskar asked why I was crying over a bit of string. I told him it was not string. It was the one thing on this ship that did not need a screen to agree with it. A figure eight tied properly will not slip and will not jam, and when the job is finished you can still loosen it with a wet thumb.
I am sending you a spare length with one tied in it. Keep it on your windowsill. When the ring starts to shudder again, as it will, put your thumb on the loop, pull the tail through, and breathe. Love, Nadia.
