Black vine scroll band design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a horizontal band design of a black vine that twists across the frame, with curling tendrils and small leaves branching off it. Grey dots are scattered above and below the vine, adding a light counterpoint to the solid black linework. The design is set on a plain beige background and is centred in a wide, landscape composition.

Mags Torrance had kept the iron gate of the old Tannery Yard for forty years, and in all that time nothing had grown through its railings but ivy she cut back every spring. So when bindweed came up between the cobbles that November, she took it for a stray from the cemetery and pulled it. It came back by morning, thicker, and looped twice round the gatepost like a ribbon tied by someone patient.

She sat up with a lamp that night. Past midnight the streetlamps on Calder Row dimmed one by one, and the vine moved along the wall the way a sleeper turns over, black and slow, sending out curls at each junction. Where it crossed a puddle, grey berries swelled on the stems, dull as pebbles in the wet. Mags knew the old tale from her gran: a vine grows only where someone has waited too long for a letter. She had been waiting for word from her brother since the war, and she had never said so aloud.
Toward dawn the vine reached her boot and stopped. It did not climb. It lay there with its leaves folded, as though asking to be left alone or let in. Mags set the lamp down and did not pull it.
The post came at seven. Among the bills was an envelope in a hand she had not seen since 1944, postmarked Naples and forwarded twice. She read it standing in the gateway while the vine uncurled around her ankle, and for once she did not reach for the shears.
