Arrow through an infinity symbol

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A single-line black drawing of an arrow with feathered fletching that runs diagonally through a looping infinity symbol. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits centred on a plain white background. The composition is simple and symmetrical along the loop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the lamp, it's older than the both of us. The Caddick brothers ran the archery stall on the Eight, which is what the old hands called the rail ride that looped twice through the field behind the chapel, like a figure drawn by a drunk man who got it right on the second go. Every night a boy would pay his penny, take up the bow, and try to put a shaft through the painted ring at the far end of the booth.

Nobody ever hit it. The ring was pinned to a board the brothers had painted in the winter of the great frost, and the white had worn thin where the wind came off the river. One October young Ada Pell came with a cracked bow and a bundle of heron feathers she'd plucked herself, and she asked old Caddick why the mark was never struck. He told her the ring was not the mark. The mark was the loop the arrow had to make to get there.

So she drew back, loosed, and the shaft went up over the crowd, down past the swinging lamps, round the rail of the Eight, and back through the far loop, all in one unbroken line. Nobody saw it strike. The brothers are gone now, and the board is gone too, but on still nights, if you stand by the rail and keep your breath quiet, you can hear the arrow still going round, slower each year, never quite arriving.
