Figure under an umbrella in watercolour rain
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A dark blue silhouetted figure in a coat and boots stands beneath a blue umbrella, with the body drawn in loose black and blue washes. Vivid streaks of green, red, pink, yellow and orange run down from the umbrella like rain and splatter across the surrounding skin. The design is centred on the leg with the figure on a vertical line and the paint drips filling the space around it.

Mrs Okafor's umbrella had been dripping against the vending machine since half past eleven, and every time the doors of Ward 9 sighed open, another puddle crept towards the skirting. I mopped it twice. The third time I gave up and propped the thing by the fire exit, where its blue canopy looked like a patch of sky somebody had forgotten to take down.

Out past the ambulance bay the car park lamps had gone orange and smeared, and the rain ran down the windows in long streaks that caught the green of the exit sign and the red of the taxi rank. It looked as if someone had tipped a paint pot down the glass. I thought about the woman in the relatives' room, the one who had been sitting in her good wool coat since two, turning a paper cup round and round in her hands and refusing tea.
Joanne, on the desk, saw me holding the umbrella and rolled her eyes. 'She'll be back for it, love. Nobody leaves their brolly on a night like this unless they've got bigger things on their mind.' So I took it down the back stairs, and the canopy flapped half open, the ribs catching the light from the fire door, and I went out into the car park to look for her at the bus shelter.
She was there. She stood under the shelter with her back to the road, rain bouncing off the concrete around her shoes, and when I held the umbrella out she turned and looked at it for a while before she took it, as if it were something she had put away and never expected to find again. Then she walked off into the wet with it open above her head, and the lamps ran down the blue like colour pouring out of a jar.
