Colourful umbrella with rain on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bold umbrella with a curved handle sits above a scatter of teal raindrops and black dots. The canopy has panels filled with teal, lilac and pale shading, a yellow and orange scalloped top, and a heart in the centre panel. Thick black outlines define the shapes, and the colour is saturated against the pale skin.

You carry the ferry crate up from the quay in the first drizzle of October, and by the time you reach the shop on Gull Lane the rain has settled in the way it always does on Skerrow, sideways and without apology. The bell over the door still works. Morag Pell is already reaching for a black umbrella with a bent wooden handle, as if she has been expecting you since spring. She says the island has three kinds of weather: wet, wetter, and the afternoon when the gulls stop talking. You have been here six weeks and believe her about all three.

Her workshop sits at the back under a skylight the colour of weak tea. Along one shelf stand canopies she has rescued from the bins behind the chapel, their ribs bent like broken fingers. She restitches them in whatever the boats leave behind: teal sailcloth, lilac oilskin, a strip of yellow flag from a wrecked yacht. Nobody on Skerrow asks for matching panels. In the centre of one canopy sits a heart cut from pink tablecloth, sewn so neatly you almost miss the stitch.
Ask about it and she shrugs. Her husband, Iain, mended boats and nothing else, and he used to say a heart in the middle kept the rain honest. She has not sold a heart-panelled umbrella since he went out in the February gale. You understand she is not asking you to fix anything. She is asking you to take the next one out into the weather.
So on the first dry afternoon you take the spare from the peg by the door and walk down to the harbour wall, the sky gone a pale green and the gulls finally quiet. You open it there, feeling foolish. The canopy catches the light through its teal and lilac panels, and for a moment the air above you glitters with drops that refuse to fall. Then they come down all at once on the far side of the wall, and you stand dry in the middle of them.
