Filigree heart with lettering on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A filigree heart outlined in teal sits on the skin, with bold lettering across the centre that reads part of a phrase in black and grey. Below the lettering, an ornate black and teal motif tapers to a point at the base of the heart. The linework is smooth and the teal shading fades slightly toward the edges, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark background.

The iron was still ticking as it cooled when Nell Harrow lifted the last scroll from the anvil and held it to the lamp. Her father had taught her that a filigree heart was a lie told in iron: it looked light, all lace and air, but every curl had to bear its weight. Tonight she needed it to bear a name.

The commission had come from the Palace Pier committee, who wanted the new balustrade finished before the summer crowds. Mr Gilroy, the foreman, had drawn the pattern himself, a spire at the base that rose like the old lighthouse, and across the centre a line of letters he wanted cut through in dark iron. "Make them legible from the prom," he'd said, "so the drunks can read it and feel sentimental."
Nell cut the letters by hand, filing each stroke until the grey metal dulled. Her mother had left in March with a fishmonger's clerk and a paper parasol. Nell did not think about that while she worked. She thought about the spire, how it narrowed to a single point that would catch the first sun over the water each morning.
When the balustrade went up in June, the committee admired the teal wash the painter had brushed over the scrollwork. Nell said nothing. She walked the length of the pier at dusk, touched the cold point of the spire where it met the rail, and found the bolt she had loosened on purpose still turning under her thumb. Maybe the wind would take it. Maybe not. She left it turning anyway.
