Heart-shaped ribbon tattoo with Mom in script lettering, green flowers and leafy swirls, on skin.

Heart ribbon with Mom script and flowers

Lettering · Mixed · Photo

A heart formed by a looping ribbon, with the word Mom written in script across its lower curve. Green five-petal flowers with orange centres and small green leaves sit along the ribbon and swirling tendrils. The ribbon is shaded in grey and black, while the flowers and leaves are filled with colour, and the design is centred on plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Halfway up the Hause, the wind had already taken Maggie Reiver's hat twice, so she stopped on the cairn to pin her collar and check the parcel against her chest. Brown paper, string tied in the double knot her father always used. Below her the valley lay under cloud like wet wool, and the farm at Scarth was a single lit window.

Inside the parcel was a tin of ribbon, grey silk faded at the edges, and a card in her brother's cramped hand: For Mam, whenever the ewes come down. Maggie had carried it from Keswick without opening the tin, out of respect or cowardice, she couldn't tell which. Green flowers had been stitched along the spool in a pattern her mother used to doodle on the backs of feed bills: five petals, orange middles, tendrils curling off into nothing.

At the gate the dog met her, then old Walt, who took the parcel without a word and read the card twice under the lantern. "She'd have liked the blue better," he said. "Always said the grey looked like rain." He untied the knot, lifted the tin and set it on the wall. Maggie waited for the sting, and it didn't come. Instead the wind found a loose end of the ribbon, lifted it like a hand, and carried it up over the wall toward the pass.

Walt watched it go. "Well," he said. "Somebody up there's got a bow to tie."
