Film camera and daisies on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A Nikon FM10 film camera sits above a curled film strip, with its frames showing flowers in muted red-brown tones. Black and grey daisies and small blossoms fill the lower area and sides of the design, with soft shading across the camera body and lens. The composition wraps around the thigh and is shown in a close, straight-on photograph.

Brother Anselm found the camera wedged behind the cold frames, its strap rotted to a grey thread, and nobody in the community could say who had left it there. The lens cap was gone. Someone had wound the film on to frame thirty-six and stopped. He carried it to the darkroom under the bell tower because the abbot had once said that anything found in the garden belonged to the garden, and Anselm preferred to be the one who decided what that meant.

The darkroom smelled of vinegar and wet paper. He pulled the strip through the developer by red safelight, counting under his breath as the tank rocked. Frame after frame came up as daisies: white heads in long grass, a bank of them under the wall, a single one bent in the wind with a bee on its lip. Every shot was taken low, as if the photographer had knelt among them. Not one showed a face.

On the last frame, the daisies had been picked and laid in a row along the sill of the north window, the same window he could see from where he stood. He hung the negatives to dry and went out at dusk. The sill was bare. Under it, pressed flat into the damp mortar, lay a dozen flower heads gone to paper, and beside them the brass cap of the lens, face up, catching the last of the light.
