Anatomical heart and light bulb on a lower leg
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
An anatomical heart forms the body of a light bulb, with a heartbeat trace running across the centre and a magnolia bloom with leaves rising from the top. The design is built from fine, sketch-like linework and layered hatching, with the shading creating depth in the heart's chambers and vessels. The piece is entirely black and grey and sits centred on the leg against a dark background.

The wire came up the valley road in the spring of 1953, strung pole by pole by men who never drank in the Fleece, and by June half of Cawder had a bulb hanging over the kitchen table. Only Edith Harrow refused one. She said a lamp that burned without oil was a thing with no heart in it, so she kept her paraffin lamp lit on the chapel sill, beside the magnolia her husband had planted against the wall, which came out early that year, white and heavy.

The engineer, a thin man called Tobias Quayle, came to her door in September with a box under his arm. Inside was a bulb of frosted glass, and in the glass, drawn in wire no thicker than a hair, a heart. He had blown it himself in Leeds, he said, and run the filament along the chambers so it would pulse when the current ran. Edith turned it over and found a line scratched across the middle, the same line the doctor had shown her on a paper strip the winter her husband died.
She did not thank him. She carried the bulb into the chapel, screwed it into the socket above the font, and threw the switch. The glass flickered, then steadied, and the heart inside began to beat in bright and dark like something remembered. The village came in twos and threes to look at it. Within a week the lamp on the sill had gone out, and nobody in Cawder could say who had put it out.
Edith died the following winter. The bulb is still lit above the font, though nobody pays the meter for it, and the magnolia by the chapel wall flowers twice a year now. Children say the heart only beats when someone in the valley is being loved properly. The grown-ups say that is nonsense, and then they go and check anyway.
