Fine line arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black arrow runs diagonally across the inner forearm, with a solid diamond at the head, a circle at the tail end and delicate parallel lines forming the fletching. The linework is thin and crisp, with solid black fills on the head and tail. The photograph is taken against a pale grey-blue wall, with the hand relaxed at the lower left and the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The archery booth at the autumn fair in Harrowgate had one prize left that nobody could win, a tin whistle hung on a nail above the target. Mags Tennant ran it from a camp chair with a tarpaulin roof, and she let the children try for nothing but the look of the thing. Her father had built the target from a barn door and two sacks of sand, and he had told her that a true shot leaves the bow without asking permission from the wind.

A boy called Eli came every evening that week with a farthing in his fist and never once hit the ring. On the last night he brought a bent bow his grandmother had carried over from the mill towns, and he said he could not sleep for the sound of it singing in the cupboard. Mags let him draw it. The string rang like a struck wire, and the arrow went wide, clean through the canvas of the next booth, where a man selling toffee apples swore loudly and then laughed.
Mags walked round to fetch it and found the shaft lying in the sawdust beside a black stone the size of a plum, which she had never seen before. It had a hole worn through its middle, and the arrow's tail sat in it as if measured. She put the stone in her apron pocket and gave the whistle to Eli, who blew it until the gaslights hissed. She kept the stone on the windowsill of her van for the rest of the season, and nobody ever again missed the ring at the Harrowgate fair.
