Dear Nell, the pot of gold leaf went over on the Tuesday, so I've had to use plain black enamel for the Cartwright window and I'm not pleased with it. Mr Okafor says the customers won't know the difference, but I know, and so will you when you see the photograph Mrs Pryce took on her Brownie camera. The lettering on the chemist's door across the lane has come out wrong too, the descenders crowding the hinge, and I stood in the rain for an hour trying to make the loops behave.

You asked in your last letter whether I still practise the flowing hand from the copybook, the one Miss Dunstan made us copy until our wrists ached. I do, every night at the kitchen table, with a steel nib and the cheap ink from the stationer's on Gate Street. Last night I wrote the same two words down the length of a sheet of brown paper until they stopped looking like words and became only a line that rose and fell like a river trying to find the sea. Then I wrote them again, slower, and the line held together, and I thought of you.

I am sending this with a small strip of card folded inside. It is the first thing I have lettered that I'm proud of, and it is not for a shop. Lay it along your own forearm and trace it with your finger. Go gently at the top, where the pen wants to run. You will know it when you have it right, because the line will feel like it belongs to you and not to the hand that drew it. Write back soon, and tell me the weather in Kent is kinder than it is here.
