The lift at Hallam House had stopped again between the eighth and ninth floors, and Dilys Crane counted the tins in her carrier bag while she waited for it to make up its mind. Four tins of pilchards, a small loaf, and a pot of lavender from the Saturday market, its roots wrapped in newspaper so it would not shed soil on the stairs.

The pot was meant for the balcony outside 9C, where Mrs Oyelaran had lived until her daughter moved her to a care home in Bexley in March. Nobody had watered anything out there since. Dilys had been doing the rounds with the spare key, checking taps and bins, and each time she passed that balcony she saw the bare concrete ledge and thought it looked like a mouth missing a tooth.

The lift shuddered and carried on. On the ninth floor a young man stood in the corridor with a box marked KITCHEN, glaring at a lock as though it had been rude to him. He thanked her without looking up. She set the pot down beside his door and tapped one of the four spikes of tiny buds. "Lavender. It wants sun and nobody fussing over it. Water it when the top's dry, not before."

He asked if it was for his flat. She said it was for the ledge, which was not quite the same thing, and left him holding the carrier bag while she took the stairs down. Halfway to the fifth floor she heard a balcony door scrape open above her, then nothing. She decided that was as much as anyone could ask of a plant on the ninth floor, and of a man with a box marked KITCHEN.
