Fine line arrow on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single black tattoo of an arrow-like shape runs diagonally across the outer ankle and heel. It is drawn in thin, even linework with small dotted details along the shaft and a round terminal at one end. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the design sits centrally on a dark leather background.

Every autumn the fog came up Scarrow Bay thick enough to hide the lighthouse, and every autumn Hanne Moller went down to the breakwater with her bow and her box of line-arrows.

The arrows were ash, straight as a rule, with fletching cut from gull feathers and a brass ball set on the nock end. Behind each one ran a fine tarred cord. A boat lost in the murk could catch the cord and haul itself to the quay. Hanne had made forty of them. She had never once been asked to make a forty-first, so when Pieter Vos came running with his face white and said his youngest had gone out in the skiff at dusk, she did not stop to ask why he had not come sooner.
She shot high and to the left, where the water was shallowest against the rocks. The arrow went into the grey and the cord paid out behind it, humming. For a long time nothing came back. Then the line jerked twice, the way a child tugs a sleeve, and the boy's voice came up out of the fog, saying the cord had led him in like a string through a maze.
They hung the arrow above the hearth afterwards, cord still tied to the brass ball. Hanne said it was only a piece of ash and a feather, and that the sea had done the rest. Pieter said nothing. Every autumn after, when the fog came, somebody in Scarrow would find a length of tarred cord coiled neatly on their doorstep, and nobody ever claimed to have left it.
