Small black key tattoo on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a key with an ornate bow at one end and a long, slim shaft tapering to a flared tip at the other. The design is a solid black silhouette with little internal detail, and the ink is crisp against light skin. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame on a bare upper arm, with a soft blurred background.

Nobody on days knew what the brass key on the night porters' board was for, which suited Walsh fine. He had the board to himself from ten until six, a ring of forty keys hung in order beside the kettle, and the one at the far end, long as my finger and worn smooth at the bit, had no tag at all.

I asked him in my second week. He just shrugged and said the old wing had been shut since the flood of '79, and that the lock it fitted was behind a panel in the basement corridor where the pipes ran. "Don't go poking," he said. "Ward sister's got enough to worry about."

I poked. At three one morning, with the corridor humming and a trolley of clean sheets parked by the lift, I found the panel, a brown door no taller than a child, the keyhole pale under the dust. The key went in as if it had been waiting. It turned with a soft, reluctant click, and behind it was only a stair running down into cold air, smelling of wet stone and, faintly, of lavender soap.

I didn't go down. I stood there while the lift pinged twice for somebody else's shift, then locked the panel and hung the key back on its hook. By morning the board looked exactly as it had. On my way out I saw Walsh at the window with his tea, and he didn't look up, only said, "You found it, then," and I understood he had been waiting for someone to ask.
