Fine line arrow tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A thin vertical arrow with a chevron-shaped head at the top and a layered chevron fletching at the bottom sits on the side of the ribs. The linework is fine and even, with the fletching filled in with solid ink, and the arrow is shown in two photos, one with the arms raised and one with them lowered. The skin tone is warm and the background is a plain bedroom wall with a blue star-patterned fabric.

Dear Tomasz, the oven at the back of Halloran's has started knocking again, the same knock you swore was a ghost, and I have been listening to it at four every morning like a clock with a grudge. The flour lorry comes on Tuesdays now instead of Mondays, which Mrs Okafor says is the council's idea of a joke. Your old wooden peel is still propped by the door where you left it, and I have stopped pretending I will move it.

Last night I found the chart you pinned inside the flour cupboard, the one with the tide times in your cramped capitals and a little arrow drawn pointing north-west towards nothing in particular. You always said a true bearing was just a promise you made to the wind. I laughed at you for that. Then I made the first batch of bloomers alone at half three with the radio turned low, and the dough rose the slow, sulky way it does when nobody is watching it.

The arrow on the chart had its fletching filled in heavy, the head drawn thin and careful, as if you had done it while the boat was rolling. I sold forty loaves before the sky went grey, and I stamped each one with the little mark you cut from a cork, and nobody asked me what it meant, which I suppose is the trick of a good mark.

Come home when the wind turns. I will leave the back door on the latch and the kettle warm, and I will keep the oven knocking until you can tell me what it is.
