Small car outline on the lower abdomen

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple outline of a rounded car, drawn in thin dark linework with no shading. The tattoo sits on the lower abdomen to the right of the navel, above the waistband of blue jeans. The image is a close crop of bare skin with a grey top pulled up at the top edge, and the ink is the only colour in the tattoo.

The little car lived behind Seaspray House with its nose against the bins, and Mrs Pruett had told you three times that nobody else was to touch it. She had bought it off a retired dentist in Weymouth the summer the pier lost its ballroom, a round slate-grey thing with two doors and a roof like an upturned bowl, and she drove it to the Co-op on Tuesdays at the pace of a hearse.

The Tuesday you took the keys, gulls were screaming over the chip shop and a lodger called Mr Abernethy stood on the step with a suitcase held shut by a belt. He owed eleven weeks. You lifted the case onto the back seat, which was just wide enough for a case and a grudge, and drove him up the hill to the station while Mrs Pruett watched from the bay window with one hand flat on the glass.

The engine coughed twice on the cliff road, then found its nerve. Mr Abernethy said nothing for two miles. At the platform he counted out the eleven weeks in coins, every one, and tipped you a shilling for the ride. When you got back, Mrs Pruett was in the kitchen with a tea towel over her shoulder, grinning like a girl at a dance.

Two days later the car was in the gravel again, nose to the bins, as if it had never been anywhere. Mrs Pruett patted the roof the way you might settle a dog. 'Mr Abernethy has posted the money,' she said, 'with a note saying the car has character.' She went inside, and you stood a while in the drive, looking at the round grey shape of the thing, wondering which of you had really been driving.
