Small geometric knot motif down the lower back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small vertical tattoo sits at the centre of the lower back, made of a diamond-shaped lattice or knot pattern with a small pointed motif at the top and bottom. The linework is fine and even, in black ink with no shading. The tattoo is shown small in the centre of a bare back, with a grey knitted top above and light denim shorts below.

The chapel roof had been gone since the siege, so the rain fell straight onto the altar and the knotwork carved above the east window. You are the one who has to climb to it, because Old Tomas says his knees are finished and the lady of the estate wants the lattice repointed before the wedding guests arrive. You take the rope, a bag of lime and a chisel wrapped in sacking, and you tell yourself the stone is only stone.

The pattern is a diamond lattice that never quite closes, each loop passing under the next like thread through cloth. Halfway up, someone has cut a small arrowhead into the jamb, pointing down, and beneath it a name you cannot read because the moss has taken the letters. You work with the trowel until the light goes thin and gold, and for the first time in weeks you stop counting the days until the wall gives way.
When you finally reach the top, there is a crack running through the middle of the knot, and wedged inside it is a tarnished bolt-head, the sort that held a shutter a century ago. You prise it free and turn it over. It is shaped like an arrow, the tip and the tail both worn smooth by hands that were not yours.
Below, Tomas calls up to ask whether the lattice will hold. You tell him it will. You do not mention the bolt in your pocket, or the crack you left open on purpose, so that the next person who climbs up will find it too.
