Fine line botanical sprig on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A slender stem with small leaves and tiny buds or flowers rises diagonally along the forearm. The linework is thin and even, with minimal shading, so the design reads as crisp black outline on pale skin. A grey wall, a framed picture and a lace garment appear at the edges of the frame.

You find the cutting on the third morning of frost, pinned under a flowerpot on the potting bench and wrapped in brown paper from an old seed packet. Your aunt Ruth never wasted anything. The note beside it says only: Bottom leaves off, keep it dark until it remembers it is a plant.

You do as she says. You strip the lowest leaves with your thumbnail, the way she showed you the summer you were nine, and stand the stem in a jam jar of rainwater on the kitchen windowsill, where the light comes in grey off the yard wall. Each evening you lift the tea towel and check it. Nothing. The buds at the top stay tight as pinpricks, and the leaves fold inwards as if they are listening for something you cannot hear.
In February a white fuzz of root appears at the base, thin as cotton thread. You move it to a pot of grit and compost on the bench, because the ground outside is still hard enough to break a fork. You keep thinking of Ruth on her knees by the shed, talking to her seedlings as though they had complaints about the weather and she intended to hear them out.
In March one bud splits, two pale petals no wider than a fingernail. You stand over the pot in your coat with cold tea going stale in your hand. Underneath it, you find the back of the seed packet, and on it, in her looping pencil, a list of every hedgerow and garden wall she ever took a cutting from, each one with a date. At the bottom she has left a space and written your name, followed by a question mark.
