Lavender sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single lavender sprig tattoo in black ink runs up the forearm. The flower heads are built from small dark dots and short strokes, while the long stems are drawn with thin, unshaded lines that taper toward the bottom of the arm. The composition is simple and airy, with the plain grey top and dark jeans in the background keeping the focus on the design.

Dear Nell,

The gulls have taken over the harbour wall again, and Mr Pryce has put a padlock on the bait shed, so you can tell your mother the fish are no worse for it. I went down to the lavender bed behind the chapel this morning before the tide turned, the way you showed me. Most of it has gone to seed, grey heads bent over like old men at a bus stop, but the two plants by the gate are still holding their purple, and I cut a sprig with your mother's kitchen scissors so you would have something of Porthkennack to smell when you open this.

I have pinned it inside the lid of the tea caddy, where the damp can't reach it. Your father's boat came in at four with nothing in the nets but a boot and a broken oar, and he sat on the step for an hour without speaking. I brought him a cup and he held it the way you hold a thing you've forgotten you're carrying. Then he said the lavender smelt like the summer you were born, which I did not expect from him, and we both laughed until he coughed.

You asked in your last letter whether I was lonely in the cottage. I am not, not really. The stems of those plants go down so thin and so far into the ground that I sometimes think the whole village is held up on them. Come home at Michaelmas. I will leave the gate open and the kettle on, and we can walk out to the bed together and I will show you where the new shoots are coming through.

Your loving aunt, Gwen
