Botanical sprig tattoo on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A slender stem rises diagonally with two open flower buds at the top and a larger bloom lower down, with small leaves branching off on both sides. The linework is thin and black, and the petals are partly filled with fine dots that give them texture. The tattoo is shown in greyscale on a smooth area of skin, with a dark blurred surface in the background.

The sweet peas went in late that year, after the frost had finished arguing with the fence posts, and Mrs Ada Lowther marked each row with a bent teaspoon because the proper labels had blown into the brook. Nobody on Alder Lane grew anything that didn't climb, so the boy from number nine came over to see what the fuss was about.

Ada kept her seed in a biscuit tin with a dented lid, sorted into brown paper twists. She opened one and tipped a few grey-black seeds into his palm and told him each one was a small pea that had decided to wait. You don't rush a pea, she said. You pinch the dried pods, rub them between your palms until the papery husks come away, and count them the way a clerk counts coins, slowly, because the counting is the point.

He came back every Saturday through August. The stems wandered up the netting, two buds opened first, then the lower bloom came over the fence as if it had somewhere to be. In September a gust took the top blossom clean off and Ada laughed until she had to sit down on the water butt.

When the tin went to the church jumble the following spring, he kept one twist of paper in his coat pocket. He sowed the last of her seed in a cracked pot on his own windowsill, counted out seven, pressed them under the soil with his thumb, and sat back to wait for them to decide.
