Fine line botanical sprig on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A delicate sprig of leaves and small flowers curves in an arc across the upper arm, with a cluster of blooms at the lower end. The linework is thin and fine, with light shading in the leaves and petals. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin, set against a plain background and a dark top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Idris Penhale had been drawing the same sprig for three weeks, and every morning her nib caught on the same leaf. "Again," her husband said from the doorway, holding two mugs of tea he had no intention of drinking. She pushed the paper aside. The seed merchant in Newlyn wanted a plate for his catalogue, a bramble of wild thyme and a stem of something with a name nobody in the harbour could agree on, and he wanted it by the Thursday boat.

She had cut the sprig herself from the wall behind the net loft, where it grew out of the mortar in a curl that looked more like a hand than a branch. The boats came in low that week, the gulls sat on the slipway in ranks, and the men talked only of the wind. Idris said the stem was wrong, that no plant grows in an arc like that. She told him plants grow towards whatever is keeping the light off them. Every drawing she made bent the same way, following the curve of the harbour wall where the water turned in.
On Wednesday night she stopped trying to be accurate. She inked the flowers last, small bells clustered at the bottom where the stem had snapped, and she let the leaves go pale where the lamp did not reach. In the morning the drawing looked like a path someone had walked away from. She posted it anyway, with a note apologising for the blots.
The merchant wrote back that the plate would hang in his office above the scales, and that he had never seen a sprig so keen to leave the page. Idris read the letter aloud at the table and laughed until she had to put her mug down. The original was still on her board, bent towards the door, and she did not move it.
