Wildflower sprig on the side of the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single sprig of wildflowers is drawn in thin black linework, with several round clustered blooms at the top and smaller flowers and buds branching along a curving stem. The lines are fine and even with no shading, and the design is shown in black ink against pale skin. The tattoo sits on the side of the torso and is framed by the soft edge of the body.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop pulling at the bracken, it has feelings. Yes, Tom, it does. Now. The summer old Mabbott's boy went up past the sawpit to fetch the scabious for his mother, the purple pincushion ones that grow where the wood gives up and the field starts. He had a knife, a tin cup and a wager with the miller that he could bring back a whole sprig without a single bloom knocked off.

He didn't. He came down the lane at dusk with a stem bent over his shoulder like a hook, buds opening and shutting all the way along it, and the miller laughed until he choked. But his mother took the sprig and set it in a jug on the sill without a word, and in the morning every little head had turned to face the window.
Here is the part you won't like. Nobody in that village ever found the place again. Every spring the boy went looking, and every spring the flowers were on the path behind him instead of in front, growing in a line back toward the lane, as if they were walking home ahead of him. The last of them is still up there, the old folk say, beside the sawpit, tall as a man and tangled with the honeysuckle, waiting for someone to bring the cup back.
So when you go up for blackberries, mind the stems. Take only what you need and leave the rest for the boy. Now off with you, before the light goes.
