Three daisies on a side rib
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Three daisies with layered petals and central discs sit in a loose curve, with several leaves tucked between and behind them. The petals are outlined and shaded with fine stippled texture, giving the flowers depth and a soft, realistic look. The design is rendered only in black and grey on a light skin tone, and it follows the curve of the ribs with the largest bloom on the left.

You find the daisies in the ditch past the second cattle grid, three heads of them, the only colour for forty miles of grey scrub. Your father used to say the desert never bloomed, that rain was a rumour the sky told to keep people hopeful. Yet here they are, pale-centred and stubborn, leaning out over the tarmac as if they had been waiting for a car to stop.

You stop. The hire car ticks as it cools and the heat lifts off the road in sheets. Ruth at the petrol station in Calvary Wells gave you a jar of water and a warning about the turn-off ahead, and you have ignored both. You kneel in the gravel and count the petals: thirteen on the nearest, eleven on the next, the third one lopsided where something had chewed it. Behind them, thin leaves like fishbones lean towards the sun.
Your sister used to draw these, the same shape over and over on the back of school worksheets, shading each petal with pencil until the paper shone. She said a daisy was the only flower honest enough to show you its middle. You didn't believe her then. You take a photograph with your phone, one bar of signal, and send it to her with no message, because you have never managed to say things straight.
Her reply arrives before you reach the car: a photo of her own, a jam jar on a kitchen sill with three daisies in it, already dropping their petals. Underneath she has written, "They don't last. Pick the ones on the verge." You look back at the flowers in the ditch, then get in and leave them where they are, the engine loud in the empty road.
