Fine line botanical sprigs on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small cluster of wildflowers, leaves and buds is drawn in fine black linework, with two sprigs curving upwards from a central point. The ink is solid and even, with no shading, and the design sits on smooth skin beside a dark V-neck top. The composition is close and centred, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Ines, the officer at Vale Pass took the seed envelope from my hand the way you would lift a moth off a windowpane, careful not to tear the paper. He held each packet under his lamp and read the labels aloud, slowly, as if the names might be contraband too. When he reached the bundle tied with green thread he asked what the two sprigs on the drawing were. I said the thin one with the knotted buds was bird's-foot trefoil and the other was wild thyme, the kind your mother used to tuck into the bread. I was not certain of the rest. He wrote that down too.

We had been travelling since before light. The bus left Orsk without its heater working, and by the time we reached the wire fence the windows had frosted from the inside. Two of the other passengers were arguing about a goat. I kept my eyes on the envelope in my lap, the cuttings wrapped in damp newspaper, and thought about the meadow behind the old schoolhouse where we first found those flowers growing out of a cracked step, leaning towards each other as if they had agreed on something.

At last the officer stamped the form, pushed it back through the slot and said the flowers could go through, but only if I promised they would not be planted on the north bank of the river. Then he gave me a small smile, looked at the cuttings once more, and said his own grandmother had grown the same thyme. I have decided to plant the second batch in the courtyard at Kessel, where the walls keep the wind off. Write back and tell me whether the bird's-foot has come up.
