Lupin sprig on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall flower spike with small closed buds rises from a single stem, flanked by two round buds and two star-shaped leaves at the base. The linework is dark and fine, with soft grey shading on the petals and leaves. The design sits on the upper arm against a plain pale background, with a dark top visible at the right edge.

Alma had the ovens lit by ten to four, when the street outside still belonged to the bin lorries and the one streetlamp that buzzed. The flour was already sifted. Her grandmother's tin of lupin seed sat on the top shelf where it always sat, its lid dented from forty years of being prised open with a knife.

The sprig was on the step when she came out to drag the crates in. Someone had wrapped it in a page of yesterday's local paper and left it against the door, the stalks still wet from the verge where the lupins grew thick along the railway cutting. A tall spike of closed buds packed tight as boiled sweets, two star-shaped leaves at the base. No note. Nobody in Thornley knew the cutting had been mown on Monday, or that the crop had come in slow this year.
She stood the stems in a jam jar on the counter beside the proving baskets and went back to her scoring. Bread first, then the seed cake. The dough tore pleasantly under the blade. Every so often she glanced across at the jar. The buds were still shut, only a faint blue-grey showing at the tips, like something deciding whether to speak.
By seven the shop had warmed, the window had fogged, and the first customers were stamping rain off their boots. Alma wiped her hands and looked again. Three of the buds had split along their seams, pale petals curling back as though someone had finally let go of a breath. She set the last loaf on the rack and left the stems where the light could reach them, and the bakery smelled of toasted seed and something green she could not name.
