Black fine line tattoo of two botanical sprigs with buds, leaves and a small rose-like bloom, placed on the side of the ribs.

Fine line botanical sprigs on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two sprigs of flowers, buds and leaves are drawn in thin black single-needle linework, with one bunch centred on a rose-like bloom. The tattoo is set against pale skin on the side of the torso beneath the arm, with a dark top visible at the edge of the frame. The composition is small and open, with the two sprigs splayed apart like a loose V.

The bigger sprig is from the rose Dennis planted under the bins the summer before he went, the one that never flowered until the year he left. The thinner one is lavender I cut from the verge by the bin store. They don't belong together, I know that, but the bins are where everything on this estate ends up growing.

You won't talk to me about the Tuesday, and I won't make you. I only wanted you to know the rose opened the morning after the removal van pulled away. Nobody saw it but me, standing at the kitchen window with the kettle going cold. I counted eleven petals before the wind took the first one off over the car park, and I thought, well, that's him sorted. He always had a sense of timing.

Put the rose in a jam jar on your sill, facing east, and pinch the lavender back to the second leaf the way he used to do when he thought nobody was watching. Let the two of them lean apart if they want to. Plants find the light even when the pots are on different balconies.

Come down when the lift works. The kettle's still on at mine.
