Fine line bull head on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a bull's head with curved horns, a triangular marking on the forehead and two small dots above it sits on the back of a hand. The linework is thin and single-tone in dark green-grey ink, with no shading. The hand rests on a grey surface holding an orange cup with a striped straw, and a gold wristwatch is visible on the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bull's head was the last thing Kostas let Thessa paint, and he made her practise it three times on a broken sherd before he trusted her with a whole jar. Horns first, one unbroken curve that lifted off the clay only at the tips, where the line thinned to nothing. Then the triangle on the brow, which he said was the house mark of the potters' street, and last the two dots above, for the stars that were already there when the bull was born. She held her breath to keep her hand still. Kostas watched and said nothing, which from him was praise.

The jar was fired, cooled and wrapped in fleece for the walk down to the harbour. A trader from Miletus unrolled it on a crate, turned it slowly, and tapped the triangle with one thick finger. "Looks like it's squinting at me," he said. "Does it do anything?" Thessa opened her mouth to explain, but Kostas answered first, that it kept the oil from going sour. The trader laughed, paid in silver by weight, and the jar went into the hold of a ship that smelt of tar and goats.

That night the slip pot was nearly empty. Thessa dipped the reed brush and, because nobody was watching, drew the bull again on the back of her own hand, horns curving toward her knuckles, the two dots above. The ink dried slowly, the colour of river mud under green water. The jar would cross the sea and end up on some stranger's table, but this one small bull would stay where she could see it, and she sat with her hand open in the lamplight until the wick guttered out.
