Rain had been coming off the canopies since seven, and by eleven the gutters of Tanner Row were running brown with it. I was still stacking the last crates when Mrs Okafor ducked under my awning, hood up, her shopping trolley tipping on one wheel. She wanted lotus, the pale ones from the back bucket, but I had only three left and they were already opening, their petals curled like wet paper.

"Those are promised to the Hendersons," I said, which was a lie. Nobody had ordered them. She didn't argue. She watched the water bead on the plastic sheeting and said her husband used to buy lotus every Friday, before the corner shop closed, and she had never found anything that smelled the same. I wrapped the stems in the sports pages because they were nearest and took her coins. Her hand was cold, and she held mine a moment longer than a sale needed.

Around noon the drizzle thinned and I found my mother's old ledger under the till, the one she kept before the computers came. For thirty years she had written the same kind of line in it, a name and a date and a flower beside them, in a looping hand that ran along the margins like a ribbon. Lotus meant someone had lost something. I turned the pages until I found his name, then read the entry slowly, the way you read a letter you already know by heart.

I closed the ledger and wrote Mrs Okafor's name beneath his, the date beneath that, and beside it, in pencil, drew a lotus with its petals still shut.
