Fine script lettering on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two raised arms are shown against a soft blue-grey background, with gold bangles and a ring. A thin, cursive script line runs along the inner forearm of the right arm, and a small dark mark sits on the wrist of the left arm. The ink is dark grey-black and the image uses shallow focus and soft, natural light.

Dear Ruth,

I have started this letter four times and burned three of them in the range, so forgive the smudge where the pen caught. The pier fog came in again on Tuesday and stayed until Thursday, and Mr Halloran at the chandlery says the herring boats have been coming back half empty all month. Mother sends her love and says you are not to bring the children on the train in November, whatever Frank tells you about the fare.
The thing I actually want to tell you is about the tin. You remember the biscuit tin under the stairs, the one with the Coronation picture worn off the lid? I found it when I was scrubbing the cupboard for the Whit fête. Inside were Dad's letters from the summer he worked at the Clyde yards, all of them addressed to a Mrs Agnes Mullan in Largs, none of them opened. I did not know he had a sister by that name, and I do not think Mother did either.
I have not decided whether to post them. Mrs Mullan would be seventy now, if she is living. I walked as far as the post office on Friday with them in my handbag and stood under the clock for a quarter of an hour, reading the words on the brass plate by the door until they stopped meaning anything at all.
Write back soon, and tell me what you would do. Keep your fingers warm, and do not let the wind have the last word.
Your loving sister, June
